BPA Radiologist Helps Injured Loggerhead Turtle

January, 2017

BPA Radiologist David Pearse, MD did his civic duty in reading the MRI scan of juvenile loggerhead turtle Homeslice, found floating in the Mosquito Lagoon area of Canaveral National Seashore last August with severe wounds to her carapace and head.

After months of rehabilitation at Brevard Zoo, the turtle was in need of a magnetic resonance imaging scan to ensure her spinal cord was fully recovered.

Animal MRI machines are not big enough for sea turtles, so Health First worked with zoo officials to allow Homeslice to get the scans at the hospital, where BPA Radiologist Dr. Pearse worked with Health First staff to ensure the young turtle was healthy enough for her to be released back into the wild.
